I’m often asked which are the best beaches in Crete and the answer depends on what you’re looking for. From pink sands and peaceful coves to wild landscapes and family-friendly beaches, this Greek island has something for every taste and need.
I’m Ioanna Karataraki. I was born and raised in Heraklion and have been working in island excursions for years. In this guide, I’m sharing my 14 favourite beaches in Crete, from the most famous spots to those still off the main tourist trail.

The best beaches near Chania
1. Elafonisi
Elafonisi is one of Crete’s most famous beaches, and you’ll see why as soon as you arrive. The pink-tinged sand meets shallow, turquoise waters, creating a flat-bottomed lagoon where you can walk or swim at your own pace.
Part of the beach has facilities, while heading across the water to the islet takes you to a quieter, protected area. I often recommend it to families with young children, but keep an eye on the wind!

2. Gramvousa-Balos
If I had to choose just one view to represent Crete, I’d probably pick Balos Lagoon. The white and pink sand and the different shades of the sea, from turquoise to emerald, create one of the island’s most iconic landscapes.
Nearby Gramvousa adds a touch of history to the visit. The island is home to a shipwreck and a Venetian fortress dating back to the XVI century.

3. Kedrodasos
Kedrodasos alternates between sand and rocks, with turquoise, crystal-clear waters. Behind it lies an ancient juniper forest, offering areas of natural shade.
There are no facilities or services here, so it’s best to arrive prepared. The final stretch is a little uneven, but when you arrive, you’ll find one of the most unspoilt corners of the Cretan coast. It’s the beach I recommend to anyone who loves nature and wants to avoid the crowds of Elafonisi.
4. Seitan Limania
Seitan Limania is a small stretch of pale shingle and sand, enclosed by high rocky cliffs. The water is a deep blue, creating a striking contrast that stands out in photographs too.
The beach has no facilities and can get very busy. The descent requires care and suitable footwear, but the scenery is truly striking. You’ll often spot wild goats in the area too, which have become a familiar sight.
5. Loutro
Loutro is a small seaside village, with white and blue houses overlooking deep, crystal-clear waters. The beach is small, pebbly and has facilities, but it’s the atmosphere of the village that makes a visit here special.
As there’s no road access, you won’t find any traffic here. You arrive by ferry or on foot, helping to create a more relaxed pace. It’s one of the places I recommend when you feel like slowing down and taking in the scenery.
6. Agia Roumeli
Agia Roumeli is a peaceful pebble beach surrounded by the White Mountains. The deep blue of the Libyan Sea and the mountain cliffs behind it create a very different landscape from the lagoons and sandy beaches of the west coast.
I still remember the feeling of reaching the sea after the long walk through the Samaria Gorge. Getting into the water was the perfect way to recharge my batteries. Even without taking on the hike, you can reach Agia Roumeli by ferry and spend a peaceful day here.

7. Frangokastello
Frangokastello has clear, shallow waters, a peaceful atmosphere and a partly equipped beach. Dominating the landscape is the 14th-century Venetian fortress, built right next to the shore.
As an archaeologist, I find places where the landscape preserves traces of the past particularly fascinating. Frangokastello is also linked to the legend of the Drosoulites, Cretan warriors who, according to local tradition, appear at dawn near the castle.

8. Agios Pavlos Sand Dunes
The Agios Pavlos dunes are very different from Crete’s typical beaches. Large sandy slopes run straight down towards deep, dark-blue waters, creating an almost desert-like landscape.
The descent along the dunes can be challenging, especially during the hottest hours, but the views are worth the effort. I particularly like it in the late afternoon, when the changing light brings out different colours in the sand.
9. Preveli
Preveli is a dark-sand beach at the mouth of a river. The waterway winds through a palm forest before reaching the sea, creating one of the most unusual natural settings on the southern coast of Crete.
Before settling down in the sun, you can walk among the palms, follow the river and then cool off with a swim. The walk down is steep, but you can also arrive by boat from Plakias, avoiding the staircase.
10. Triopetra
Triopetra takes its name from the three rocks rising from the sea at one end of the beach. It’s a long stretch of coastline made up of sand and small pebbles, with turquoise waters and rugged mountains in the background.
What I like most is the sense of space. Even during the busier periods, the length of the beach means you can always find a quiet spot.

The best beaches near Heraklion
11. Matala
Matala has clear, deep waters and is surrounded by cafés, tavernas and shops. What makes it instantly recognisable are the caves carved into the rocky cliff that surrounds the bay.
The caves became famous for being home to a hippie community in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, Matala retains that free-spirited, lively character, while also being a great destination for families. It’s a place where you can alternate between a swim, a cultural visit and an evening stroll.
12. Treis Ekklisies
Treis Ekklisies takes its name from three Byzantine churches in the area. The beach is made up of dark sand and small pebbles, with deep, clear waters. Cliffs and mountains rise around it, giving the coast a rugged, wild feel.
The journey there is also part of the experience. The road winds down the mountainsides, gradually opening up views of the sea. Once you arrive, you’ll find a simple, peaceful resort that feels a world away from the more touristy beaches of the island.

13. Vai Palm Forest
Vai has golden sand and clear, generally calm waters. The beach has sunbeds and parasols, making it one of the most convenient options for families.
The real highlight of this Cretan beach is the palm forest that stretches all the way to the coast, giving the landscape a tropical feel. It’s one of the most iconic sights in the east of the island and a great choice when you want to spend a relaxing day without giving up the convenience of facilities.
14. Kolokitha
Kolokitha is a small beach of pale sand, lapped by shallow, turquoise waters. Ancient olive trees grow around it, adding a typically Cretan character to the landscape and making the bay feel more secluded than it actually is.
The calm sea makes it easy to swim and explore the seabed with a mask and snorkel. The final walk is short, but the beach doesn’t have the facilities you’ll find at more developed resorts. It’s a good choice if you’re looking for clear water and a simple setting.
