1. Hike the Samaria Gorge for wild scenery
One of the most iconic sights in Crete, the Samaria Gorge is where I send anyone who wants to connect with the island’s raw nature. The trail winds through enormous cliffs and pine forests before opening onto the Libyan Sea.
My top tip is to start early and take your time. It’s a long walk, but every step feels rewarding. And if you want a hassle-free way to experience it, join a guided tour of Samaria Gorge – you’ll likely meet fellow outdoor lovers along the way.
2. Explore Knossos Palace and its myths
Just outside Heraklion, the Knossos Palace is one of the most fascinating places to visit in Crete due to its history and intricate architecture. Walking through its ruins feels like stepping into the world of the Minoans.
I always think of the legend of the Minotaur here – it’s history, myth and culture in one memorable experience.

3. Wander coastal gems like Balos and Loutro
Crete’s coastline is full of surprises. The famous lagoon of Balos feels almost tropical, while the peaceful village of Loutro offers a quieter escape. Only accessible by boat or foot, Loutro stays beautifully untouched. These are two of my favourite off the beaten track spots in Crete, where time slows down and the scenery does the talking.
Pro tip: combine a visit to Balos lagoon with a trip to the Gramvousa islands for pristine waters and wild scenery.
4. Taste your way through Cretan cuisine
Food is truly at the heart of Cretan life. I recommend trying traditional meze, local cheeses and, of course, raki, a much-loved spirit shared as a gesture of welcome.
For me, sitting in a small taverna, sharing dishes and chatting with locals over simple, delicious plates really is one of the best ways to soak up authentic Cretan hospitality.

Beaches in Crete Worth the Journey
1. Elafonissi Beach for dreamy pink sands
Elafonissi is often called the nicest beach in Crete, due to its shallow lagoon, soft pink-tinged sand and crystal-clear water that create a dreamlike setting.
It’s an ideal spot for families and casual swimmers. I always recommend visiting early in the morning to enjoy it before the crowds arrive.

2. Balos Lagoon for postcard-perfect views
Balos is one of the best beaches in Crete for pure scenery. The mix of turquoise water and white sand feels almost unreal.
Getting there requires a bit of effort, but that’s part of the adventure. It’s ideal for couples and photographers chasing standout photo spots.
3. Agiofarago Beach for adventure seekers
If you’re craving something more adventurous, Agiofarago is a hidden gem on the south coast. You’ll reach it after a short hike through a gorge, passing caves and a small chapel.
The reward? Calm waters and a peaceful atmosphere. You really can’t beat it.

4. Marathi Beach for calm family days
Near Chania, Marathi is one of the best sandy beaches in Crete for families. The water stays calm even on windy days, making it a safe and relaxing choice.
There are also plenty of tavernas nearby, so it’s easy to spend a full day here without rushing.
5. Bali Beach for easy-going charm
Close to Rethymnon, Bali Beach is another wonderful option for couples and families. Its small coves and sheltered waters create a laidback atmosphere.
It’s perfect if you want comfort, facilities and beautiful views without putting in too much effort.
The Places Locals Still Love
1. See Agios Nikitas in the Asterousia Mountains
If you want to experience a wilder side of Crete, head to Agios Nikitas. The hike here offers rugged coastal views, wild landscapes and complete tranquillity.
This area feels untouched and authentic, so it’s perfect if you’re searching for something beyond the usual tourist routes.

2. Swim in Kourtaliotiko Gorge waterfalls
South of Rethymnon, Kourtaliotiko Gorge is one of the most refreshing places to visit in Crete. A stone path leads down to a hidden waterfall near the Chapel of St Nicholas.
The water is freezing, but super invigorating. A quick swim here is something you won’t forget in a hurry.
3. Watch the sunset at Frangokastello Beach
Frangokastello is one of my favourite sunset spots. The beach is calm and less crowded, with a 14th-century Venetian castle adding to the atmosphere.
If you love local legends, ask about the mysterious Drosoulites while you’re there. It’s part of Crete’s storytelling tradition and adds a fascinating edge to the experience.

4. Experience Matala’s festival spirit
Matala is famous for its caves and its 1960s hippie history. Today, the Matala Beach Festival keeps that spirit alive, with live music and art right by the sea.
Matala is a fun experience that’s very different from the usual sightseeing and offers a more laidback, bohemian vibe.
5. Celebrate life at a summer panigiri
I can’t recommend this one enough: join a panigiri if you have the chance. These village festivals bring people together with music, dancing and traditional food like souvlaki, grilled meats, pies and more.
For me, they capture the true soul of Crete, with their warmth, liveliness and strong sense of community.
