The most famous

Crete: Wild nature and history

During my vacation in Crete, I fell in love with its rugged landscapes, the hidden Minoan sites tucked into the hills, and the authenticity of the local people. In the north, beaches like Balos and Falasarna dazzle with their white sand and crystal-clear waters. Inland, the Psiloritis Mountains — rising 2400m above — and the famous Samaria Gorge offer perfect trekking routes and breathtaking views.

And then there’s the history. The Palace of Knossos, dating back around 4000 years, and the archaeological site of Zakros reveal the secrets of the ancient Minoan civilization. Heraklion, the capital, is rich in museums, archaeological finds and local markets. Not far away, the uninhabited island of Spinalonga—once a leper colony—lets you inside the island’s turbulent past.

Already picked your destination? Then don’t miss my tips on what to do in Crete in a week.

Unmissable in Crete:

  • Attractions: Palace of Knossos, Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Spinalonga Island
  • Beaches: Balos, Falassarna, Elafonissi

Rhodes: Medieval fortresses and sea views

If you love history and medieval architecture you’ll love Rhodes, one of the most captivating Greek islands. Its capital, with a medieval old town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a maze of cobblestone alleys, imposing walls and historic buildings. Stroll along the Street of the Knights and visit the Palace of the Grand Master—testament to the Crusader era.

About an hour’s drive away is Lindos, a charming village of white houses and sea views. Here you’ll find a beautiful acropolis perched high on a promontory overlooking the sea. Also unmissable is a trip to Symi, a smaller island famous for the Monastery of Panormitis and its postcard-perfect harbour.

To find out more, check out the Rhodes travel guide with tips from a local.

Unmissable in Rhodes:

  • Attractions: Lindos Acropolis, Rhodes Old Town, Symi Island
  • Beaches: Tsambika, Anthony Quinn Bay, Agathi
  • Local dishes: Gemista (stuffed tomatoes and peppers), Pitaroudia (chickpea fritters), Embonas wine

Three things to do in Rhodes:

Corfu: Hiking and lush nature

Among the Ionian Islands, Corfu stands out for its lush vegetation and excellent hiking trails. One of the most famous is the Corfu Trail—a 180km hiking route running from north to south, winding through olive groves, hills, with coastal views. I only hiked a short section between Lakones and Angelokastro, and I highly recommend it: short, scenic, it had breathtaking views over the west coast.

With architecture influenced by Venetians, French and British, Corfu Town is a rare example of non-religious UNESCO heritage in Greece that shouldn’t be missed. Stroll its elegant streets and feel transported back in time.

And don’t forget to visit the abandoned village of Palia Perithia and the Bella Vista lookout, nicknamed ‘the Balcony of the Gods’ for its stunning view over Palaiokastritsa.

Unmissable in Corfu:

  • Attractions: Palia Perithia (abandoned village), Bella Vista viewpoint, Corfu Town, Corfu Trail
  • Beaches: Paleokastritsa, Glyfada, Porto Timoni
  • Local dishes: Sofrito (veal in garlic and white wine sauce), Bourdeto (spicy fish stew), loukoumades (honey fritters)

Things to do in Corfu:

Sites & Bites: Corfu Old Town, Greek doughnuts and ouzo: Discover Corfu’s authentic flavours on a guided walk through the old town and Spianada Square. Taste ouzo, kumquat liqueur and honey-soaked loukoumades. Learn how olive oil is made and indulge in local specialties amid historic alleyways and traditional shops.

Zakynthos: Stunning beaches and sea turtles

On a holiday in Zakynthos, the beauty of nature blends seamlessly with beach life. The island is known for its fields of flowers, lively nightlife, frescoed monasteries, and, most of all, its postcard-perfect beaches.

The most famous is undoubtedly Navagio Beach—also called Smugglers’ Bay—renowned for the rusting shipwreck stranded on the shore, framed by towering cliffs. For families, beaches like Gerakas and Laganas are ideal: calm, well-equipped and perfect for children.

A visit to Marathonissi islet, also known as Turtle Island, is also a must. It’s a nesting site for the protected loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). During summer, it’s possible to spot them in their natural habitat, which is a thrilling experience for those of all ages.

Unmissable in Zakynthos:

  • Attractions: Marathonissi Island, Anafonitria Monastery, Blue Caves
  • Beaches: Navagio, Gerakas, Laganas, Marathonissi
  • Local dishes: Zakynthian sartsa (beef-based dish), mandolato (soft almond nougat)

Three things to do in Zakynthos:

Kefalonia: Snorkelling and excursions

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands and a dream destination for nature lovers. Its mountains covered in cypress, pine and olive trees make a stunning contrast with the clear blue sea. Mount Ainos (1628m high) watches over the island and is home to the only national park on a Greek island. It’s perfect for hiking—and with a bit of luck, you might even spot the wild Ainos horses.

At the foot of the mountain are vineyards that produce the renowned Robola wine. I highly recommend trying it at a local winery. Paired with local olive oil, honey and feta cheese, it’s a pleasure for the palate.

Kefalonia is also one of the best spots for snorkelling, diving, or boat trips along the coast. Explore the underground Melissani Lake, unwind on Myrtos Beach, or take a stroll through the port town of Fiskardo.

Unmissable in Kefalonia:

  • Attractions: Mount Ainos National Park, Melissani Cave Lake, Fiskardo town
  • Beaches: Myrtos, Antisamos, Petani
  • Local dishes: Robola wine, Kefalonitiki Kreatopita (meat pie), thyme honey

Three things to do in Kefalonia:

Kefalonia, Greece

Mykonos: Beach parties and ancient history

Mykonos is a party paradise! On beaches like Paradise Beach and Paraga, you’ll dance barefoot in the sand from noon until sunrise. The beach clubs and bars create an enchanting, high-energy vibe, with international DJs and crowds who return year after year.

But Mykonos isn’t just nightlife. The island has a rich history dating back to the 11th century BCE, and is dotted with relics from the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman eras. Visit the Church of Paraportiani and the Alefkandra district—better known as Little Venice—in the town of Mykonos.

My tip: Stay in the capital and set out from there to visit attractions like the Monastery of Ano Mera and the quaint fishing village of Ornos. You can also take a day trip to nearby Delos, the legendary birthplace of Apollo and a fascinating archaeological site.

Unmissable in Mykonos:

  • Attractions: Church of Paraportiani, Little Venice (Alefkandra), Delos Island
  • Beaches: Paradise Beach, Paraga Beach, Ornos Beach
  • Local dishes: Kopanisti (spicy creamy cheese), Louza (smoked pork), Amygdalota (almond cookies)

Three things to do in Mykonos:

Santorini: Sunsets and scenic views

Santorini is Greece’s postcard-perfect island, with whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches perched atop dramatic cliffs. This stunning landscape was formed after a massive volcanic eruption in the 2nd millennium BCE, when the island of Thera collapsed and created the caldera. The result? Breathtaking views and sunsets that make it a favourite among couples looking for romance.

Equally scenic are the hikes along the crater’s edge from Fira to Oia, and the peaceful strolls through small villages filled with cozy tavernas. Wine lovers can stop at one of the many wineries for a glass of Assyrtiko, the island’s famous local grape.

The island doesn’t skimp on beautiful beaches either—think the red sands of Red Beach or the black shores of Kamari and Perissa. For a cultural touch, don’t miss the ruins of Akrotiri, known as the ‘Greek Pompeii’.

Unmissable in Santorini:

  • Attractions: Caldera trail from Fira to Oia, Akrotiri ruins, Megalochori wineries
  • Beaches: Red Beach, Kamari, Perissa
  • Local dishes: Assyrtiko wine, Domatokeftedes (tomato fritters), Fava Me Koukia (yellow split-pea purée)

Three things to do in Santorini:

Kos: Beaches and thermal springs

Kos has a truly special atmosphere. Across the island, you’ll find the remains of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman civilizations. The capital Kos Town feels like an open-air museum, filled with historic sites and lively squares. Don’t miss the Asklepieion—an ancient healing centre considered to be the birthplace of Western medicine.

For beach lovers, Kos never disappoints. Its coastline offers variety: long sandy stretches, warm thermal springs and peaceful coves. You can snorkel, dive, or simply relax for hours with a good book.

One evening I ended the day with a magical boat ride at sunset. With a drink in hand, the sun dipping below the horizon, suddenly it was as if all my worries vanished.

Unmissable in Kos:

  • Attractions: Asklepieion, Kos Town, village of Zia
  • Beaches: Agios Stefanos, Therma Beach, Paradise Beach
  • Local dishes: Pitaridia (a traditional pasta dish), Krasotiri (wine-aged cheese), local honey

Three things to do in Kos:

The lesser known islands

Samos: Turquoise seas meet vineyards

Samos is one of those islands that slowly win you over. It may not have the fame of other destinations, but once you set foot on it, you’ll feel its soul: green, radiant, and still wonderfully authentic. The nature is lush, the villages are vibrant and welcoming, and history whispers from every corner.

During my stay, I wandered through terraced vineyards, sipped Samos Muscat straight from the cellar, and discovered hidden beaches like Tsamadou, nestled among pines and cliffs. For a cultural side trip, visit the Eupalinian aqueduct—a tunnel carved more than 2500 years ago.

Samos is perfect if you’re looking for an island that blends relaxation, adventure, delicious food and ancient history… without the crowds.

Unmissable in Samos:

  • Attractions: Eupalinian Aqueduct, Archaeological Museum of Vathy, Patmos Island
  • Beaches: Tsamadou, Livadaki, Potami
  • Local dishes: Revithokeftedes (chickpea fritters), Bourekia (sweet pumpkin pastries), Samos Muscat

Three things to do in Samos:

Lesbos: Villages, olive groves and thermal springs

Lesbos is a hidden gem I instantly fell in love with—authentic, not too crowded and with a truly relaxed vibe. The first thing that strikes you are the endless olive groves, which produce some of the finest olive oil in the country.

The island is known as the birthplace of the poet Sappho and for its thermal springs, especially those in Eftalou and Polichnitos, beautifully nestled in nature. You’ll also find picturesque villages like Molyvos, perched on a hill with a medieval castle, and Skala Sikamineas, one of the most charming harbors in the Aegean.

Thanks to its varied landscape—from peaceful beaches to the petrified forest of Sigri—Lesbos is ideal if, like me, you love to alternate between sea, hiking and culture.

Unmissable in Lesbos:

  • Attractions: Molyvos village, Sigri petrified forest, thermal springs
  • Beaches: Agios Isidoros, Tarti, Anaxos
  • Local dishes: Kalloni sardines (prepared in various ways), Ladotyri Mytilinis (PDO cheese)

Three things to do in Lesbos:

Karpathos: Peace and tradition

Tucked between Rhodes and Crete, Karpathos is fairly well known but still quiet and delightfully authentic. The island blends mountains, serene coves and villages where life moves slowly. In the mountain town of Olympos, time seems to stand still—women still wear traditional dress and age-old customs live on. It’s like an open-air museum.

Karpathos is also a dream for nature lovers. Whether you’re hiking through pristine landscapes, snorkelling in clear waters, or relaxing on nearly deserted beaches like Apella and Kira Panagia, you’ll truly feel disconnected from the world.

And the food? Absolutely delicious. Try Makarounes (homemade pasta with onions and cheese) or enjoy fresh fish in a seaside taverna. Everything feels just right.

Unmissable in Karpathos:

  • Attractions: Olympos village, Folklore Museum in Menetes, Acropolis of Arkasa
  • Beaches: Amoopi, Apella, Kira Panagia
  • Local dishes: Makarounes, Sitaka (creamy cheese), Vyzanti (lamb or goat stuffed with herbs and rice)

Two things to do in Karpathos:

Skiathos: Beach life and relaxation

Skiathos is a small yet lively island in the Sporades, best known for its natural beauty and over 60 beaches. Thanks to its airport, it’s easy to reach and popular with travellers in search of sun, sea and comfort. You’ll also find cultural gems like the Evangelistria Monastery, where the Greek independence flag was first blessed. Bourtzi Peninsula, with its remnants of the Venetian era, is perfect for a scenic stroll.

The most famous beach is undoubtedly Koukounaries, with golden sand and clear water, but Banana Beach (great for water sports) and Lalaria Beach (only accessible by boat) are also stunning. The short distances on the island allowed me to visit multiple beaches in just one day.

In Skiathos Town, you’ll find charming alleys, shops and tavernas. Be sure to visit the house of writer Papadiamantis and take a boat trip through sea caves and to nearby islets.

Unmissable in Skiathos:

  • Attractions: Evangelistria Monastery, Papadiamantis House, Bourtzi Peninsula
  • Beaches: Koukounaries, Lalaria, Banana Beach
  • Local dishes: Baklava with Skiathos honey, savoury quiche, grilled fresh sardines

Two things to try in Skiathos:
