We know some of you live for those adrenaline pumping days on the road, of tangled, wind-swept hair and glowing bronzed skin. Travelling can be exhilarating, refreshing and sometimes even life-changing, and for the adventure seekers out there, just plain thrilling.

So, what better time than the new year to plan your next adventure‑filled trip? From the ancient sands of the Arabian Desert to the active volcanoes of Iceland, the mountains of Morocco and the Mexican cenotes, here’s our list of the best countries for adventure travel. Throw on your backpack, lace up your boots and let the adventure begin!

1. Morocco

Surrounded by the Sahara, Morocco has a culture that’s is as rich and complex as the desert in which it lies. Its history spans several millennia and is shaped by influences from the Muslims, Romans, Byzantines and Phoenicians, which has led to its unique mix of styles and traditions. Get lost in the bustling streets of Marrakech, the iconic Casablanca or the beauty of Essaouira, and be sure to explore the Atlas Mountains, where you’ll glimpse the country’s authentic and wild spirit.

2. Portugal

A country known for its nostalgic charm, Portugal is also home to some magnificent natural beauty. Bordering the Atlantic Ocean, it has some of the best surfing in the world. The wild Azores archipelago, the island of Madeira with its unspoiled nature, and of course the Algarve, are also ideal for hiking and outdoor activities.

It may be better known for its history, art and delicious food, but Italy also has what it takes to be an adventure destination, thanks to its unspoiled and diverse landscapes. From the Alps in the north, with its breathtaking trails and climbs, to the lakes and peninsula coasts where water sports thrive, there are plenty of excellent options. And let’s not forget the otherworldly landscapes of its volcanoes, Vesuvius and Etna, for would-be explorers.

4. Switzerland

A little piece of paradise, Switzerland boasts some of Europe’s most beautiful lakes, rivers and mountains. There are awesome opportunities for canyoning, white water rafting, Alpine hiking and fantastic skiing. From Interlaken, you can travel to Jungfraujoch, Europe’s highest train station standing at 3400m above sea level. It’ll take your breath away.

5. Iceland

Iceland is the ultimate adventure traveller’s paradise! Take your pick of activities, from spectacular whale-watching to hiking over ancient glaciers, exploring geothermal lagoons, volcanic craters and vast National Parks. And if that’s not enough, you might even be able to see the Northern Lights depending on the time of year you visit.

  • Go on a snowmobile safari across the ice
  • Take a boat ride with possible sightings of marine wildlife

6. Canada
