Pick up insider tips from a local to uncover London’s most authentic side and experience it beyond the usual tourist trail.
London is packed with iconic sights – Big Ben, Tower Bridge and the London Eye are all must-sees. But to really get under the skin of the city, you need to look beyond the classic tourist routes.
To show you a more authentic side of London, we’ve handpicked insider tips from Laura-Jane (LJ), part of TUI’s Tourist Boards & Partnerships team, who’s been living in the city for over two and a half years. She originally moved to London for work, but stayed for the energy, the opportunities and the strong sense of community you’ll find in its neighbourhoods.
Here are her 16 go-to experiences for seeing London like a true local.
London Like a Local
ToggleWhat to see in London beyond the usual tourist trail
1. Walk along the Thames in Hammersmith and Fulham
If the South Bank is London’s most iconic riverside walk, the stretch between Hammersmith and Fulham is its more relaxed, local counterpart. Think fewer crowds, more neighbourhood buzz and a properly local feel.
It’s perfect at sunrise or sunset, when the light sparkles on the water and historic pubs start to fill up.
LJ’s tip? Stop for a coffee or a pint along the way, just like Londoners do at the weekend.
2. Explore Chiswick and Barnes
Chiswick is a local favourite, with an easy mix of elegance and laid-back charm. At weekends, a market brings the area to life – ideal for browsing stalls, dipping into independent shops and stopping for brunch or lunch.
Barnes, meanwhile, feels like a hidden gem, with a village-like charm that offers a welcome break from central London. From here, it’s easy to reach Richmond Park and Kew Gardens.
3. Spend a day in Dalston
For London’s creative, contemporary edge, head to Dalston in East London. The area has a raw, energetic feel that shows the city at its most real.
With trendy coffee spots, artisan bakeries, independent boutiques and plenty of street food, it’s made for a relaxed wander, especially on a sunny day.
4. Watch the sunset from Primrose Hill
Just north of Regent’s Park, Primrose Hill is a go-to spot for locals, especially on sunny days when people gather for picnics, catch-ups and skyline views.
Best time to go? Just before sunset, when the sky turns soft pink and the city stretches out in silhouette.
5. Head up to Sky Garden or The Shard
For views over London, Sky Garden and The Shard offer two very different experiences. Sky Garden is great if you want something spectacular without the price tag – it’s free, but you’ll need to book ahead.
If you’re after something extra special, The Shard takes things up a notch, especially at night when the city lights up. Perfect for a sunset drink or a romantic evening.
6. Experience London through seasonal events
London shifts with the seasons, and following its events calendar is one of the best ways to experience it like a local.
- Summer: festivals like BST Hyde Park and All Points East bring the city’s music scene to life
- Christmas: Oxford Street, Regent Street and Covent Garden glow with festive lights
- Iconic events: Notting Hill Carnival, Chelsea Flower Show and Wimbledon showcase London’s multifaceted character

7. See a show in the West End
Not exactly a hidden gem, but a West End show is a must – even for locals. From iconic musicals to bold new productions, theatres here come alive every night.
Local tip: keep an eye out for last-minute tickets and same-day deals. You can often catch top shows for less.
8. Explore street food and vintage markets
Markets are one of the best ways to tap into London’s real character. As LJ says, you’re truly spoilt for choice – from Borough Market for global flavours to Portobello Road for vintage finds.
For something more local, seek out smaller pop-up and neighbourhood markets, they’re often less crowded and full of character.
9. Join a run club
One of LJ’s more original tips is to join a running club. These social running groups have really taken off in London, offering a great way to see the city, stay active and meet locals. Hyde Park is a favourite spot, thanks to its wide paths and scenic setting.
10. Try a Sunday roast
No London trip is complete without a pub stop – not just for a pint, but for traditional British food. If you’re in town on a Sunday, go for a classic roast with meat, potatoes, veg and gravy. It’s a proper local ritual.
11. Visit a museum with a guide
London is packed with world-class museums, many of them free. From the British Museum to the Victoria and Albert Museum, exploring with a guide brings everything to life and gives you a much deeper feel for the stories behind the collections.

12. Treat yourself to afternoon tea
Afternoon tea is one of London’s most iconic experiences, and it’s much more than just a tea break. Go classic at a historic hotel like The Ritz, or try something different, like a bus tour or a Thames cruise.
13. Book a special dinner at The River Café
For a memorable meal or special occasion, LJ recommends The River Café – one of London’s most stylish dining spots, known for its standout food and elegant setting.
14. Stop by Papo’s Bagels
For a quick bite, Papo’s Bagels is a great shout. Their New York-style bagels are perfect for a casual, quality snack. It’s one of those simple stops that makes the city feel more lived-in.
15. Take a coffee break at The Carbon Kopi
London’s coffee scene is thriving, and The Carbon Kopi in Barons Court and Fulham is a great example. Expect great coffee, top-notch cookies and an easy neighbourhood vibe.
16. Spend an evening in Soho
Soho is one of London’s liveliest neighbourhoods, perfect for a night out. From historic pubs to trendy bars and international restaurants, there’s something for every mood. Spots like Bar Kroketa are ideal for a relaxed evening of tapas and drinks.
It’s also perfect for bar hopping. Start with a bite, move on to cocktails and see where the night takes you.
